This type of ceramic uses different percentages of earth and clays to "pigment" the paste without the need to apply a colored glaze. The materials react directly to contact with fire. The heat influences the intensity of color that each piece can have, and sometimes, there are variations even in the same batch, which is why in a single finish, there can be a wide range of tones.
